FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is a doula?
A:  Doulas work to make the family's birth experience great, particularly concentrating on the mother.  In addition to taking formal courses and learning by apprenticing, a doula will bring her life experiences to the birth.

Q:  How often will I meet with Katya before and after the birth?
A:  I do not limit either telephone calls, e-mails, or visits before the birth.  If we live nearby, we will meet several times before the birth.  If we live a little further away, we will talk on the phone and meet 1-2 times in person.  After the birth, I always visit at least once, and often more, especially if there are any postpartum issues such as breastfeeding difficulties.  I will stay in touch via the phone or e-mail for a long time with a family that birthed with me, often for months.

Q:  How do doulas and dads work together?
A:  Doulas love to see caring, involved dads at the birth and at other times in the family's life!  During the birth, I may suggest to the dad how to best support the mom given the kind of labor she finds herself in.  Often the mom will need two support people - the doula to rub the back, and the dad to be there for her by holding her hand or telling her how beautiful she is just then.  However, should the birth prove long or other events interfere, the doula can take over the support, either partially or completely.

Q:  When will Katya arrive to the house on the labor day?
A:  I will come as soon as the family is ready.  Sometimes that means early labor, and at other times it means active labor.  I plan to stay with the family until the baby is born and breastfeeding.

Q:  Does Katya only support families who want a natural birth?
A:  I support all choices that the parents make during labor.  I really mean it.  Often the baby will choose the way she is born, and we have to follow her lead, even if it completely alters our birth plan.

I do prepare parents extensively prior to the birth to make sure that they understand their options well, and are able to make informed decisions during labor.  My ultimate goal is healthy mom, healthy baby, and a good birth experience.  I love natural birth, and I will work with you towards it as far as you can go!  But if our plans alter, I will be there for you as well.

Q:  What does Katya do during labor?
A:  I help with a calm presence, massage, aromatherapy, information, position changes, relaxing the moms' body while keeping her spirit strong, interacting with the hospital staff to let the mom labor freely, listening to the mom, and (most importantly) involving the dad!  Often, this is enough to achieve a natural birth.  Always, this is the foundation of a positive birth experience for the entire family.
